29 winners–Taiwan 16, China 10, Hong Kong 3–in four award categories: product, visual communication, spatial, and packaging design
Today, December 10, 2015, the Golden Pin Design Award announced its Best Design winners in a star-studded ceremony in the Performance Hall of the Eslite Spectrum Songyan store at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Taiwan led the way, taking 16 of the total 29 Best Design trophies, followed by China (10), and Hong Kong (3).
This is the second year that the Golden Pin Design Award has been open to entries from beyond Taiwan, welcoming a host of international submissions, while building on both the quality and quantity of entries compared with previous years. Most of the winning products and projects embody the Golden Pin Design Award’s mission: to showcase design created for and by huaren (Chinese-speaking) communities, indicating the award has achieved local and global recognition.
Naoto Fukasawa, the jury chair in 2015, said that the winners from the spatial design category were particularly impressive in terms of quality. Jury member and leading local product designer Jung-Ya Hsieh noted that the winning products clearly displayed two key trends: the proliferation of “smart” products, and an increasing appreciation of huaren culture and aesthetics among the spatial and visual design entries.
Hsieh also said that the Golden Pin Design Award’s primary purpose is to give the huaren community a voice, rather than be dominated by Western thinking and values. Fellow jury member He Ren Ke added that the habits and experience of huaren people are different from those in the West, and that the Golden Pin Design Award is special in that it recognizes and celebrates design that caters for these differences in the huaren market.
The ceremony, which was curated by pioneering Taiwanese motion graphics studio, JL Design, and hosted by celebrated TV anchor Lulu Hsia, was attended by members of Best Design winning companies and studios, as well as huaren and international design world luminaries. Guests were treated to two performances: Semifusa, a group of six Taiwanese string instrument musicians, performed at the opening; Herman Kolgen, an award-winning Canadian artist, provided a welcome interlude by performing LINK.C during the middle section.
The Best Design winners received a new trophy designed by Loretta Hui-shan Yang and Chang Yi of the internationally renowned Taiwanese glass art brand, LIULIGONGFANG. The trophy is made predominantly of liuli, or crystal glass, weighs 3 kilograms, and is topped with a 23 carat gold-plated pin.
The winners were selected by a nine-member jury consisting of jury chair Naoto Fukasawa, Product Designer, Naoto Fukasawa Design Ltd, Japan; and members Harry Williamson, Director/Senior Designer, Harry Williamson, Australia; Wai Kwan Vivian Cheng, Creative Director, Vivian Design, Hong Kong; He Ren Ke, Professor, School of Design, Hunan University, China; Jung-Ya Hsieh, Founder, GIXIA Group, THAT Inventions, and SquareX, Taiwan; Tony K.M. Chang, Executive Board Member, International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), Taiwan; Apex Pang-Soong Lin, Honorary Director, Taiwan Cultural and Creative, Industry Association, Taiwan; Wang Hsin-Kong (David), Founder, Hsin Kong Wang Design Company, Taiwan; Wei Hsiang Chan, Founder, Business Next Magazine, Taiwan.

Also new to the award this year is the Golden Pin Buyers Award, a Special Award aimed at honoring products that have a strong chance of success in the Taiwan market. A panel of professional buyers from leading retailers in Taiwan selected the winners of this Special Award. The winner is Pocket LED Projector from Delta Electronics Inc.
The Golden Pin Concept Design Award, known until this year as the Taiwan International Design Competition, awarded three Best Design winners with NT$300,000 cash prizes.

About the Golden Pin Design Award
The Golden Pin Design Award repositioned itself in early 2014 to celebrate product, packaging, spatial, and visual communication design works already on the market that were created for and within the huaren (Chinese-speaking) communities. In 2015, the three-decades-old award attracted a record-setting 2,360 entries from 10 countries around the world, and expanded the Golden Pin Award Group to include the Golden Pin Concept Design Award, the Young Pin Design Award, and two Special Awards.
The competition named its Best Design and Special Award winners in a lavish ceremony held on December 10, 2015, at the Eslite Spectrum Performance Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. The Golden Pin Design Award 2015 Forum was also be held on the same day and in the same venue, and an exhibition of 2015 Golden Pin Design Award winning products and projects will open at the Taiwan Design Museum.
The Golden Pin Award group is executed by the Taiwan Design Center and organised by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Ministry of Economic Affairs acts in an advisory capacity, and the award is sponsored by Canmeg AVEDA.
