The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has made history by creating an environmentally-friendly car with full electrical power.

Twenty-seven lecturers and students of the university who produced the vehicle within 10 months since early this year, emerged champions in the Proton Green Mobility Challenge 2012, organised for the first time in the country.

IIUM rector Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaleha Kamarudin said the victory was a special gift to the university, especially in its 30th anniversary.

Deputy rector (Research and Innovation) Prof Dr Ahmad Faris Ismailsaid IIUM would continue its research and innovation to improve the system of the environmentally friendly car for application in the existing cars.

Master’s student in automative engineering, who was also a project participant, Ahmad Hilmi Khalid said the car’s production had used a new green technology called the Cooling System Battery for electric cars.

“This car does not need to use petrol and gas as it fully uses electrical power. The battery has to be charged for three hours and can be used for 70km to 100km,” he said.

IIUM was given a research grant of RM50,000 by the Science, Technology and Innovation Minsitry for winning the competition.
